Engagement Rate

Definition

Engagement rate is the percentage of people who interact with your content compared to the number who see it. Interactions include likes, comments, shares, saves, and clicks. It is typically calculated by dividing total engagements by reach (or followers) and multiplying by 100. A higher engagement rate means your content is resonating with your audience.

Why It Matters

Engagement rate is one of the most important metrics in social media because it measures whether people actually care about what you are posting. A large following means nothing if nobody is interacting with your content. Platforms also reward high engagement by showing your posts to more people, so improving your engagement rate creates a compounding growth effect.

Example

A post reaches 1,000 people and receives 80 likes, 15 comments, and 10 shares, that is a 10.5 percent engagement rate, which is excellent. Meanwhile, another post reaches 5,000 people but gets only 50 likes and 2 comments, a 1 percent engagement rate, suggesting the content missed the mark.
