Vanity Metrics
Definition
Vanity metrics are numbers that look impressive on the surface but do not directly contribute to business outcomes. Follower counts, likes, and impressions are common examples. While they can indicate awareness, they do not tell you whether your social media is actually generating leads, sales, or revenue. They are called "vanity" metrics because they make you feel good without necessarily moving the needle.
Why It Matters
Focusing on vanity metrics is one of the biggest mistakes businesses make with social media. Having 10,000 followers means nothing if none of them are buying from you. The metrics that matter are the ones tied to revenue: enquiries generated, website traffic from social, cost per lead, and return on investment. Vanity metrics should be tracked for context, but never used as your primary measure of success.
Example
A business celebrates reaching 5,000 Instagram followers, but a closer look reveals that monthly enquiries from Instagram have not increased at all. Meanwhile, a competitor with 1,200 followers is generating 20 leads per month because their content includes strong calls to action and targets the right audience.
